The FAST-LAIN project has had the task to develop a concept of a virtual European tourism observatory. This paper is based on the outcome of the FAST-LAIN project analysis and deliberations on this issue. The concept was developed as a generic model based on:
a) existing tourism monitoring and observation processes, and
b) the construction of a tourism sustainability observatory management system.
This model was then subjected to comments and analysis by the FAST-LAIN expert group and regional partner organizations, as well as the supporting organisations of the FAST-LAIN project. The tourism sustainability observatory management system was then developed as a tool in the DestiNet Portal to demonstrate how a top-down, bottom up, decentralized virtual information workflow could be constructed in reality.
The following concept description elaborates an ideal-typical European wide virtual tourism observatory, which finds its implementation in a region-by-region and country-by-country, European-level coordinated action on EC data collection and interpretation.
